Basic Hunt Dog Prep

Your pup will have the maturity and socialization to begin her first real hunt season at a bout 10 months.  If you got your pup in the winter, you may have spent the winter and spring working on basic obedience, puppy "kindergarten," and potty training, dog parks, and some wing/retrieving introduction.  I strongly recommend all of these.

Rushing a dog into the hunt will not help him, you, or your family.  All the triple-blind retrieves in the world won't keep your pup from going "cuckoo for cocoa puffs" when the local rafter of wild turkeys comes pecking to your driveway.  She'll either tear the poor flock apart or sprint clear cross the precinct before you even get in your car to look for her.  And will you be a calm, unirrigated owner at that point?  More than likely, when you finally catch up to Gunner he'll be wagging away and you'll jump out the truck screaming your head off, contributing to his anxiety even more.

Socialization is critical to a hunt dog's development, both in the field and at home.

Having said this, about the time June or July rolls around, you may consider prepping your pup for her first year of pheasants and ducks.  That's where we come in.

  1. I got a dog from Larry and had him train him. Best hunting partner and friend I have ever had. If you want a hunting partner very well trained I highly recommend Larry to do it!!
